Shafdan Anaerobic Digestion Plant

Rishon LeZion
Started in 2011
Client: Dan Area Water – The Agricultural Cooperative Water Association Ltd

General Description: The project extends over about 102,000 square meters and incorporates civil engineering work, including the construction of structures with a built area of approximately 36,000 square meters, eight digestion pools of a diameter of 36 meters and a height of 16 meters each, around 58,000 meters of pilings of various diameters, more than 80,000 cubic meters of concrete, and 10,000 tons of rebar. The prestressed concrete walls of the digestion pools were cast continuously over several days at a time.

Green Features:
The project is a key element in the solution to stop the emission of wastewater into the sea and to carry out land-based treatment of sludge.
This process is based on anaerobic stabilization, which enables agricultural use of the sludge as well as the generation of electricity by using the biogas produced during the digestion process. The waste produced during construction is recycled by shredding and adapted for re-use as fill material.
