Shikun & Binuis Green Building

As part of Shikun & Binuis commitment to lead the incorporation of sustainability principles in Israels construction and infrastructure arena, its new home at Airport City was designed to comply with the internationally recognized American LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system for green buildings.
The Shikun & Binui building is the third building in Israel to be awarded the Gold certification, and the first in Israel to be awarded the LEED certification for the design and construction of the buildings interior.
So What is so Green about Shikun & Binuis Building?
The buildings design reflects concern for the employees quality of life in the working environment and was designed in accordance with sustainability principles and in compliance with the requirements of standards to reduce negative impacts on the environment.
For example:
  • In each wing of the building, bins are installed for sorting and separating waste and there is a designated place for collecting paper for recycling, old batteries and expired medication.
  • Green gases are used in the air conditioning systems.
  • Special carpets are used that prevent dust accumulation.
  • Designated smoking areas are located at least 8 meters from the doors.
  • The glass dividers are coated with special material that prevents build up of dust and particles. The coating reduces the need to clean the glass and avoids the need to use cleaning chemicals.


Conserving Water
  • 54% water savings compared to the ordinary building consumption in Israel.
  • All faucets in the building, including showers, are water-saving faucets (flow control).
  • A no-water method is used to clean the facilities, and there is approximately 90% savings in cleaning cloths laundry.
  • Electronically controlled faucets.
  • Dual flush toilets.
  • The air conditioner condensation water is collected for landscape irrigation: 550 cubic meters per year.
  • Waterless urinals were installed instead of the original ones.
  • New and efficient landscape irrigation systems were installed.


Conserving Energy
  • Over 90% of the electronic equipment comply with the Energy Star standard.
  • Energy management of servers.
  • Efficient climate control while maintaining the employees wellbeing.
  • Over 50% of the employees have access to thermostats and the remaining employees are less than 7 meters away from a window that can be opened.
  • The offices and conference rooms are equipped with automatic switches that turn electricity off when no movement is detected for more than 30 minutes.
  • The facility is equipped with counters that provide on-line control regarding air conditioning data.


Building Materials
  • Local and recycled finishing materials were selected to the extent possible, as well as green paints and glues.
  • 80% of the construction waste generated during the renovation was sent for recycling.
  • 12% of the material was produced locally.
  • 78% of the wood products originated from certified timber.
  • No materials that are hazardous to humans were used.


The Green Wall
The green wall increases landscaped areas and also serves as an insulating element on external walls. We view the green wall as a visible design element that reflects us and our green building philosophy, which is part of our entire sustainability philosophy.
The wall consists of local Israeli water-efficient flora.

Green Parking Lot. Green Transportation
In addition to an above-ground parking lot, the building has an underground parking lot, with more parking spaces than in the above-ground lot, as part of the overall approach of optimal land use.
Efficient lighting was installed in the parking lot.
The parking lot includes reserved parking spaces for carpool cars and reserved spaces for bicycle riders. Showers were also built on the ground floor for the convenience of the cyclers.
There is public transportation to the building a train to the Airport and a regular shuttle to Airport City.
